Xsolla Teams Up With BitPay in Partnership

Payment and billing platform Xsolla is taking another step forward when it comes to perhaps bringing the possibility of bitcoin purchased in the gaming realm.

Today’s big news is that the company, which has offices in five countries around the world, has integrated with Atlanta-based BitPay, a highly-respected bitcoin payment processing outfit that has grown considerably in the past two years.

The announcement comes not long following an August announcement that Xsolla had begun working with San Francisco-based Coinbase, so it does appear the company has changed their mind on just who should be processing bitcoin payments on their behalf.

The news is notable, especially given some of Xsolla’s clients, which include Twitch and Nexon — both prominent entities in the gaming community that already accept bitcoin.

Other clients signed up with Xsolla inthe gaming industry include Valve Corporation (the company behind the Steam gaming platform), Kongregate, and Ubisoft — though none of these companies accept bitcoin at this time.

“Bitcoin makes in-game purchases more efficient and secure than ever before,” says Sonny Singh, VP of Sales at BitPay. “Traditional payment methods like credit cards are not always able to support these types of purchases like bitcoin can.”

“Xsolla is designed to seamlessly integrate payments into the gaming process,” adds Oleg Poskotin, VP of Finance at Xsolla. “Our partnership with BitPay enables us to bring bitcoin payments to game developers, extending their purchasing freedom.”

Could bitcoin find its next big application in gaming? There’s a distinct possibility, but certainly the help of giants like Valve Corp. would help, and the ability to accept these forms of payments is indubitably within reach.
