There’s an interesting discussion that’s sprouted up on the Microsoft discussion boards relating to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) — Microsoft’s out-of-the-box malware prevention software.
A user by the handle “edc678” reports that a virus signature from the “DOS/STONED” virus was uploaded to the bitcoin blockchain. And since we’re only dealing with the virus signature, there doesn’t seem to be a threat to users.
But users of Microsoft Security Essentials are getting a whole lot of grief from their software. MSE is essentially recognizing the signature, reporting it to the user as a threat.
Even worse, when MSE attempts to scrub the “infection” from the computer, it effectively deletes the block chain file, forcing the bitcoin client to re-download it (which many know is a very large file, indeed).
So – what exactly is the DOS/STONED virus?
For starters, it’s over twenty-five years old, and it isn’t nearly as complex as today’s malware. Developed in New Zealand in 1987, a message saying “Your PC is now Stoned!” would appear approximately once every eight boots.
Aforementioned “edc678” took to the discussion board to find three bits of information. Whether or not MSE is detecting the signature of DOS/STONED; That there isn’t danger to bitcoin users; and whether MSE can be updated to bypass these sort of signatures found in the blockchain.
The user writes:
“…as its constant alerts of finding threats in the blockchain is not only worrisome, but can create panic and negative perception of bitcoin as a whole, damaging its reputation and annoying users. It’s important that MSE be updated with a more selective virus detection algorithm for blockchain files.”
Have you had first-hand experience with this scenario?

Lol.
Yes, it happened to me running Windows 8.1 yesterday. I did a full scan and the messages seem to have stopped. I had clicked take corrective actions but it does not appear to have deleted the whole block chain. In any case I use Armory watch-only wallet on top of the standard Bitcoin software. Everything appears fine now.
What about the people, machines that are taken over and hijacked by your mining? Do you really think we will just allow this atrocity. You are dealing with the most vulnerable. Please don’t mistake us for idiots as we have time on our hands. We mostly have suffered because of people like you who see us as a problem to society. No! Society is the problem and we refuse to become one of society.
Then we took comfort in our pc’s. Our cyber world let us see we could now connect to people like ourselves. We seen and got some hope back. Then get our lives hijacked for your precious bitcoin and all the new schemes. Well, sorry and all that but when you go through a bad patch in this life you come back with a new found strength. Life is starting to show me light again..
I now spend my life watching what you are doing to us. We may be invisible to you as you send your code to machines like they are AI, but you are very transparent to us. You leave your information on our pc’s along with the latest codes that lock us down. You also leave comments all over the www that hurt to the core. To think my brothers and sisters have fell for such a farce, virtual money, virtual machines and mining peoples lives for a ‘professional career’, I feel sick just saying that.
I also see young ones seeing bitcoin for what it really is. They are being penalized by youtube for voicing this information. They are the up and coming developers and techies who will fight for their love of humanity and cyber world.
I have a lot of time and a new found passion. I see who and what sites are involved. I see clever boys and girls watching you, your codes and missions. I also see the big sites like wordpress, Github facebook, #google and #Microsoft allowing this, allowing me to be held a prisoner in cyber world. I also see their links with the information for the ‘not so intelligent’ ones. Well, now I have got over the shock that I am being mined I will spread to those who are unaware.
The internet is not ours. We have wrecked planet earth and now we have used technology to turn the www into a TV and a mining the vulnerable on your quest to be a part of corporate corruption. There is no real money! You know this! You are clever but lack common sense and the ability to see the whole picture. You are a slave to big corps. We are free open minded and humble. Not weak!
The clever person will see this and use the people like myself against the prisons you call blockchain. You are stealing by leasing out our processing power for the corps who create schemes so they seek to take the last pennies from our hard work..
Wake up people..
We have a planet to save.
The child is paramount Act 1989.. UK
And yes, I am aware I could get a bullet or quietened
So what, see no evil
And fear no Evil.
The light will overcome.
We have a higher source guiding us…
I also see this photo is from my Discuss account..So this is when I was not infected by the .inf hijacking virus created by developers. All of my accounts live in the Flash Adobe..All of the power I have in my pc’s and I live from a tiny file in Adobe..Well ‘just for Today.
