Ubisoft, the gaming giant known for iconic franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, announced its move to venture into the world of Web3 gaming. It intends to do so by releasing its first blockchain-based game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles which is set to launch on October 23. This pioneering venture is set to be powered by Oasys’ Layer 2 network, HOME Verse.
Nearly a year after teasing the project at IVS Kyoto, Ubisoft, with the support of Oasys and double jump.tokyo, a blockchain game developer, is finally ready to deliver a game that integrates web3 smoothly into the gaming experience. In the game, players are in a position to build teams of mythical champions whereby each has distinct abilities. Also, they can engage in tactical PvP battles, all within the dark, mystical realm of Grimoria.
Nicolas Pouard, VP of the Ubisoft Strategic Innovation Lab, was keen to comment on the project’s significance, stating: “At Ubisoft, our mission is to innovate and create new gaming experiences. With Champions Tactics, we want Web3 to fade into the background, allowing players to focus on the strategy and fun of the game. Features like the Champion Forge recreate the excitement of playing with real-world miniatures, bringing that hands-on joy into the digital space.”
Sharing in the same sentiments is Executive producer Sylvain Loe-Mie, who emphasized the game’s dedication to immersive gameplay, saying: “This isn’t about GameFi. We are creating a truly engaging game that gives players freedom—freedom to own their assets and shape the future of the game. With a team that’s worked on iconic Ubisoft titles like Assassin’s Creed and Heroes of Might & Magic, we’re combining our expertise to deliver something special for all gamers, not just Web3 enthusiasts.”
At the core of the game, there lies an array of collections of 75,000 digital champions with each having different traits. When it comes to the players, Ubisoft has ensured that they can craft their ideal teams which can compete in battles to prevail in the present leaderboards. Additionally, with the help of the Forge system, players are able to not only customize and enhance their championships but also unlock new skills as well as combinations for competitive mastery. What this does is, it offers endless possibilities to ensure that every player’s experience is one of a kind.
With Ubisoft’s previous PFP collection, The Warlords, being the most hyped mint of Q3 in 2023, together with the minting of the 75K Champions in July 2024 which set new records and fueled anticipation for Champions Tactics, it goes without saying that the game has attracted a significant amount of attention. This has seen it have the backing of a community that has over 100K followers on X and 50K active users on Discord – evidence that Ubisoft has a solid base that is eager to explore the game’s dark fantasy.
In addition, to ensure that the integration of the blockchain elements such as player ownership and asset management enhances the gameplay experience, Ubisoft collaborated with Oasys, a game-optimized blockchain with Ryo Matsubara, representative director of Oasys, noting: “We’re excited to support Ubisoft’s first Web3 game launch on HOME Verse. With strong demand during the Warlords and Champions mints, the release of Grimoria Chronicles will elevate Web3 gaming to new heights, while showcasing the enduring appeal of Ubisoft’s brand.”
Ubisoft has a goal of redefining the web3 gaming ecosystem by delivering a seamless and engaging gaming experience which rewards the players for their creative, strategic and regular gameplay. As such, with the combination of blockchain technology and immersive gameplay, Ubisoft is shaping for a move to raise the bar for the future of gaming through Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles.
